No one wants to have to deal with a chip in the windshield from a rogue rock on the highway but are rock chips truly unavoidable?
The short answer is no, small rocks are almost completely unavoidable, and if you drive on the highway often, you are likely to have to need car window repair every once in a while. However, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t anything you can do to avoid rock chips. The good news is that there are certain steps that you can take to minimize your risk for rock chips, and our experts have compiled them into the following list for you:
Avoid driving behind vehicles with more than two rear wheels as often as possible.
It makes sense that four rear wheels will kick up twice as many rocks as a vehicle with two rear wheels, so it is a good idea to avoid driving behind vehicles with more than two rear wheels. If you do find yourself behind a vehicle with four rear tires, keep your distance and get into the other lane if possible.
Watch out for missing mud flaps.
Mud flaps are designed to minimize the amount of debris and rocks that are thrown by large tires, but not all vehicles that should have them do. If the vehicle you are driving behind is missing a mudflap on one of both of their wheels, change lanes!
